About Shubham Karoti Kalyanam. Shubham Karoti Kalyanam is a pair of Sanskrit shlokas traditionally chanted at dusk while lighting the evening lamp, or sandhya deep, in Hindu homes. The first verse praises the lamp's light for bringing auspiciousness, health, and prosperity while dispelling ill will, and the second reveres that same light as a form of the Supreme Brahman and of Lord Vishnu (Janardana), asking it to burn away one's sins. Short and rhythmic, it is often among the very first Sanskrit verses taught to children as part of daily evening prayers.
